Japanese Stonecrop 'Ogon'
Sedum makinoi 'Ogon' is a luminous, low-growing succulent that brings a splash of gold to the garden. It forms a dense, spreading mat of tiny, round, lime-gold to bright yellow leaves. It is particularly valuable for its ability to brighten up partially shaded spots, though its colour is most intense in full sun. In mid-summer, it produces tiny, inconspicuous yellow-green flowers. While it is succulent, it is less drought-tolerant than some of its sturdier cousins and prefers soil that doesn't completely dry out for long periods. It is moderately hardy (H4) and can survive UK winters in sheltered positions with good drainage, though it may benefit from some protection in the North. It is an excellent choice for a 'spiller' in containers, a bright accent in a rock garden, or even as a colourful groundcover in a conservatory. It is relatively slow-growing but very easy to maintain.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Moist but well-drained, fertile soil.
Hardiness: H4 — down to −10°C.
Flowering: Jun, Jul, Aug.
