Japanese Umbrella Pine 'Joe Kozey'

Sciadopitys verticillata 'Joe Kozey' is a spectacular and rare conifer that offers a highly distinct, upright, and narrow habit compared to the more spreading species. Its most remarkable feature is the whorls of thick, fleshy, dark green needles that resemble the ribs of an umbrella. These needles have a unique, plastic-like texture and remain attractive throughout the seasons. This cultivar is very slow-growing and eventually forms a dense, columnar tree, making it a fantastic specimen for small to medium-sized UK gardens. It is hardy (H6) but requires specific conditions to thrive: it must have acidic, well-drained, yet moist soil and a position sheltered from drying winds. It will not tolerate chalk or lime. The architectural qualities of 'Joe Kozey' make it a striking focal point, particularly in contemporary or winter-focused garden designs. While it takes some time to reach significant size, its unique beauty is evident even at a young age. It is a truly connoisseur's plant that rewards the patient gardener.
