Zebra Rush 'Zebrinus'

Iris pseudacorus 'Zebrinus' is actually the common Zebra Rush. This spectacular ornamental rush is famous for its striking horizontal bands of cream and green that run the length of its tall, upright stems, earning it the name 'Zebra Rush'. It grows to about 100-150cm tall and provides a bold, graphic vertical element to the pond side. In mid to late summer, small, inconspicuous brownish flower clusters appear at the tips of the stems. It is a clump-forming perennial that is fully hardy in the UK (H5). It should be planted in a marginal basket at a depth of 10-20cm. The variegation is most intense in early summer and in a position of full sun; plants in deep shade may lose some of the distinct banding. It is a relatively slow grower compared to the species, making it much more suitable for garden ponds. It adds light and movement to any aquatic setting.

Sun: Full sun.

Soil: Wet mud or shallow water.

Hardiness: H5 — down to −15°C.

Flowering: Jul, Aug.
