Zebra Rush 'Zebrinus'

Schoenoplectus lacustris subsp. tabernaemontani 'Zebrinus' is an exceptionally decorative marginal plant that provides instant visual impact. It is characterized by its tall, upright, cylindrical stems which are strikingly banded with horizontal rings of creamy-white and green, giving it its "Zebra" moniker. These stems can reach up to 1.2-1.5 meters in height, providing a superb architectural element. In late summer, it may produce small, brownish flower clusters at the tips. The plant is a deciduous perennial and is fully hardy for the UK (H7). It thrives in full sun, which keeps the variegation sharp and prevents the stems from flopping. It can be planted in wet mud or in water up to 30cm deep. It is slower-growing than the species and is an excellent choice for adding height and pattern to the margins of medium and large ponds. It also provides useful perches for dragonflies.

Sun: Full sun.

Soil: Wet mud or shallow water.

Hardiness: H7 — below −20°C.

Flowering: Jul, Aug.
