Silver Saxifrage Whitehill 'Whitehill'

Saxifraga 'Whitehill' is an outstanding member of the silver-leaved saxifrages, highly valued for its exceptional year-round foliage interest. It forms neat, symmetrical rosettes of bluish-grey leaves that are distinctly lime-encrusted at the margins, giving them a frosted appearance. The undersides of the leaves often have a subtle reddish tint. In late spring and early summer, it produces upright, red-tinted stems bearing dainty panicles of small, star-shaped white flowers, occasionally with a few red spots. Like its relatives, it is extremely hardy (H7) and thrives in the UK when grown in a gritty, well-drained, alkaline-leaning soil. It is particularly at home in a rock crevice, a trough, or a scree bed. To prevent the plant from rotting, it is essential to ensure that water cannot collect in the centre of the rosettes. It is a slow-growing but very reliable and architectural alpine plant that requires very little maintenance once established in a suitable location.
