Fortune's Saxifrage 'Sugar Plum Fairy'

Saxifraga fortunei 'Sugar Plum Fairy' is a distinct and late-flowering alpine that brings elegance to the shaded corners of a rock garden. Unlike the cushion-forming spring saxifrages, this species has a more lush, herbaceous habit. This cultivar features beautiful, rounded, scalloped leaves that are a deep, glossy bronze-green on top and a striking rich plum-purple underneath. In autumn, when most other alpines have finished, it sends up airy branched stems carrying masses of asymmetric white flowers. Each flower has several short petals and one or two significantly longer lower petals, giving them a delicate, fluttering appearance. In the UK, it performs best in a cool, moist, but well-drained spot in partial shade, mimicking its natural woodland-edge habitat. It is a fantastic choice for adding late-season interest and textural contrast. While hardy, it appreciates a sheltered spot away from drying winds. The foliage is so decorative that the plant remains a standout feature even when not in bloom.碎
