Bulgarian Yellow Saxifrage
A choice and very attractive cushion-forming saxifrage from the mountains of Bulgaria and Greece. Saxifraga ferdinandi-coburgi belongs to the Porphyrion section and forms very tight, hard, silver-grey cushions of tiny, lime-encrusted leaves. In early spring, it produces short, reddish stems topped with clusters of bright, golden-yellow flowers. This species is highly regarded by alpine enthusiasts for the contrast between its metallic-looking foliage and its vibrant flowers. In the UK, it is best grown in a gritty, well-drained alpine trough or a scree bed where it can be protected from excessive winter wetness, which might cause the cushion to 'brown off'. It is fully hardy (H5) and thrives in a position with full sun but with some protection from the hottest afternoon rays. It is a slow-growing but long-lived plant that adds a touch of architectural elegance to any collection of high-alpine plants. It is particularly effective when grown with other cushion-forming species.
