Masamune Bamboo

Sasaella masamuneana is a delightful small to medium-sized bamboo that is perfect for gardeners looking for dense, low-level screening or architectural groundcover. It typically reaches a height of 1.5 to 2 metres and is characterized by its slender canes and relatively large, lance-shaped leaves. One of its most attractive features is the way the leaves are held, creating a multi-layered, fan-like effect. It is a running bamboo, but it is less aggressive than many species in the Sasa genus, though containment is still wise in a border. It is fully hardy (H5) and thrives in the UK's temperate climate. It is particularly useful for planting in damp, shady corners where other plants might struggle, though it will also tolerate full sun if the soil stays moist. It is often used to provide a lush green backdrop for smaller perennials. Regular pruning in early spring can help keep it to a desired height and encourage a flush of fresh, vibrant foliage.

Sun: Full sun to full shade.

Soil: Moist but well-drained soil.

Hardiness: H5 — down to −15°C.
