Running Bamboo 'Miyakei'

A lesser-known but very decorative running bamboo that is perfect for low hedging or as an understory plant in a woodland garden. 'Miyakei' stays relatively short, usually reaching 1.5 to 2 metres. It is prized for its large, glossy, dark green leaves which are much bigger than those of most bamboos of a similar height, giving it a lush, exotic feel. It is a vigorous spreader, so it is best used in areas where it can wander freely or where it is contained by physical barriers. It is very hardy (H5) and performs exceptionally well in the UK's damp, shaded garden corners where other plants might struggle. In very cold winters, the leaf edges can sometimes wither and turn white—a natural process that doesn't harm the plant and creates a unique variegated appearance until the new leaves arrive in spring. Low maintenance and very reliable.

Sun: Partial shade to full shade.
