Running Grass Bamboo
Sasa palmata, commonly called Running Grass Bamboo, is a robust and vigorous running bamboo known for its exceptionally large, glossy, deep green leaves that can reach up to 30cm in length. This striking foliage creates a lush, tropical effect, even in UK gardens. It grows to around 2-3 metres, forming a dense ground cover or screen. Due to its strong running habit, root barriers are crucial to control its spread. It's very hardy (H6) and adaptable, thriving in a range of conditions from full sun to deep shade, and is tolerant of most soil types, though it prefers moist, well-drained soil. Flowering is very rare and inconspicuous. Ideal for providing year-round evergreen cover, particularly in woodland gardens or under deciduous trees where little else will grow.
Sun: Full sun to full shade.
Soil: Moist, well-drained loam.
Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.
