Kuril Bamboo (Shimofuri) 'Shimofuri'

'Shimofuri' is a highly decorative cultivar of the toughest bamboo species known. It is a low-growing runner (under 1.5 metres) prized for its large, wide leaves which are heavily streaked with fine cream and white lines. This variegation is incredibly luminous and brightens up the darkest corners of a garden. It is famously cold-hardy (H7), originating from northern Japan and the Kuril Islands, and is virtually indestructible in the UK climate. It is a vigorous spreader and makes an excellent ground cover for large areas or banks, but it MUST be contained in a smaller garden. It can even grow in quite deep shade, though its variegation is most pronounced in partial light. It provides a very lush, tropical look despite its incredible cold tolerance. Every few years, cutting it to the ground in spring will refresh the foliage and keep it looking its best.

Sun: Partial shade to full shade.

Soil: Any moist soil.

Hardiness: H7 — below −20°C.
