Upright Ginger strip
Saruma henryi is a unique and somewhat underused perennial that is a close relative of the Asarums (Wild Ginger). Unlike its low-growing cousins, Saruma forms an upright, bushy clump of soft, velvety, heart-shaped leaves that are a beautiful silvery-green when young. In late spring and early summer, it produces charming, three-petalled, pale yellow flowers at the ends of the stems. While the flowers are not large, they are produced over a long period and contrast beautifully with the tactile foliage. Native to China, it is perfectly hardy (H5) and easy to grow in the UK. It thrives in a position with partial shade and moist, well-drained, fertile soil. It is a very reliable plant that slowly expands its clump without being invasive. Its soft texture and subtle colour palette make it an excellent companion for bolder woodland plants like hostas or broad-leaved ferns. It is generally avoided by slugs and snails, which is a major plus.
