Sweet Box
Sarcococca confusa is a must-have evergreen shrub for the winter garden in the UK. Though modest in appearance with its glossy, dark green, wavy-edged leaves, it possesses a secret weapon: an incredibly powerful, honey-like fragrance. In the depths of winter, from December to March, tiny and somewhat inconspicuous creamy-white flowers bloom in the leaf axils, releasing a scent that can be detected from many metres away. These are followed by glossy black berries. This shrub is famously tolerant of deep shade and dry conditions, making it the perfect solution for those difficult areas under trees or in narrow side-passages. It is fully hardy (H5) and has a slow-growing, bushy habit, rarely exceeding 1.5 metres in height. It is often planted near entrances or pathways to ensure its winter fragrance is enjoyed by passers-by. It requires virtually no maintenance and is generally pest and disease-free.
