Cotton Lavender
Santolina rosmarinifolia subsp. canescens is a distinct Mediterranean shrub valued for its exceptionally fine, needle-like foliage that forms a dense, silvery-grey mound. Unlike the more common Santolina chamaecyparissus, this subspecies offers a more delicate texture and a particularly intense silver colour. In mid-summer, the plant is topped with small, button-like yellow flower heads on slender stems. While the flowers are cheerful, many gardeners choose to prune them off to maintain the tight, formal shape of the silver foliage mound. It is an excellent choice for low hedging, knot gardens, or as a contrasting element in a gravel garden. In the UK, it requires a very sunny position and sharp drainage to prevent the centre of the plant from rotting or becoming sparse. It is very drought-tolerant and stands up well to coastal conditions. Hard pruning in spring is recommended to keep the plant compact and prevent it from splitting open with age.
