Great Burnet 'Tanna'
'Tanna' is a compact and highly ornamental cultivar of the native Great Burnet, which is increasingly popular in UK 'New Perennial' style gardens. It forms a neat mound of attractive, blue-green, pinnate leaves with serrated edges. From mid-summer through to early autumn, it sends up slender, wiry stems topped with distinctive, bobble-like flower heads of a deep, dark maroon-red. While primarily grown for its architectural beauty and its appeal to pollinators, the young leaves have a mild, nutty, cucumber-like flavour and can be added to salads or summer drinks. Growing to around 40-50cm, it is much more manageable than the species. It is extremely hardy (H7) and prefers a position in full sun or partial shade with soil that stays moist throughout the summer. It is a fantastic plant for adding texture and rhythmic pops of dark colour to a damp meadow planting or a mixed herbaceous border. It is generally pest and disease-free.
