Great Burnet 'Red Thunder'

Sanguisorba officinalis 'Red Thunder' is a delightful and airy perennial that brings movement and texture to the garden. It forms a dense clump of attractive, pinnate foliage from which numerous thin, wiry stems emerge, topped with small, drumstick-like flower heads of deep maroon-red. These bobbing flowers appear in mid to late summer and continue into autumn. Reaching around 1m in height, 'Red Thunder' has a more compact and floriferous habit than the species. It is extremely hardy (H7) and easy to grow. It thrives in moist, fertile soil and is particularly effective in naturalistic planting schemes or prairie-style borders. While it prefers full sun, it can tolerate light shade. It is a fantastic plant for pollinators and the spent flower heads remain attractive well into the winter, providing interest when many other plants have faded. It is generally pest-free and requires little maintenance beyond cutting back in late winter. Because of its transparent habit, it can be planted near the front of a border without obscuring the plants behind it.
