Clary Sage 'Vatican White'

Salvia sclarea var. turkestanica 'Vatican White' is a majestic biennial or short-lived perennial that adds significant height and architectural drama to the herb garden. Growing up to 1.2 metres tall, it produces large, woolly, silver-green leaves in its first year, followed by huge, branching stems of pure white bracts and flowers in the second. The entire plant is intensely aromatic, with a complex scent often described as a mix of grapefruit, tea, and musk. In the UK, it is traditionally grown for the essential oil found in its flowers and for its medicinal history. It is fully hardy (H6) but requires sharp drainage and a sunny position to prevent the crown from rotting in winter. It self-seeds readily, ensuring a permanent presence in the garden once established. The flowers are edible and can be used to infuse syrups or as a spectacular garnish. It is a magnet for bumblebees.

Sun: Full sun.

Soil: Well-drained, light soil.

Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.

Flowering: Jun, Jul, Aug.
