Culinary Sage 'Nazareth'
'Nazareth' is an interesting and distinctive cultivar of the common sage, also known as 'Kew Gold' in some circles. It is a compact, evergreen sub-shrub valued for its unique foliage and robust aromatic qualities. The leaves are narrower and more elongated than the standard species, with a beautiful silvery-grey cast and a slightly crinkled texture. They possess a strong, traditional sage scent and flavour, making them excellent for culinary use in stuffings and with fatty meats. In early summer, it produces spikes of attractive lavender-blue flowers. Growing to about 40cm, it is perfect for the front of a sunny border or a herb-specific bed. It is hardy to H4, requiring a sunny, sheltered spot and very well-drained soil to survive the British winter successfully. Like all sages, it can become woody over time; regular light pruning after flowering and occasional replacement of older plants via cuttings will ensure a continuous supply of fresh, tasty leaves.
