Sage 'Maximum'

Often known as 'Mammoth Sage' or 'Broad-leaved Sage', this cultivar is a giant among the culinary salvias. It has an impressively robust and vigorous growth habit, forming a large, spreading mound. The most distinctive feature is the size of its foliage; the grey-green, felt-textured leaves are significantly larger than those of the standard species, often reaching the size of a small hand. These leaves are highly aromatic and possess the classic, earthy sage flavour, making them ideal for stuffing or for making large, crispy fried sage leaves. Because of its large leaves and vigorous nature, it is an excellent choice for gardeners who want a high yield of herbs for the kitchen. In early summer, it produces tall spikes of violet-blue flowers. It is a hardy, evergreen perennial that requires a sunny, open position and well-drained soil. It is more resistant to the damp conditions of a UK winter than some of the more delicate variegated sages.
