Sage 'Extrakta'
'Extrakta' is a specialized cultivar of the common sage, specifically bred for its high essential oil content and its remarkably large, broad leaves. This makes it a premier choice for the UK gardener who uses sage heavily for culinary or medicinal purposes. It forms a robust, woody evergreen shrub with the characteristic wrinkled, grey-green foliage that is so iconic in the herb garden. It is a very hardy variety (H4), but like all sages, it can suffer from 'die-back' if the soil remains too wet over winter, so sharp drainage is essential. In early summer, it produces spikes of attractive blue-violet flowers which are highly nectar-rich. Pruning is key to its longevity; the plant should be cut back by about a third after flowering to encourage new, tender growth and prevent the centre from becoming excessively woody. It thrives in a hot, sunny position and is very drought-tolerant once established. It is a reliable and highly productive garden staple.
