Friendship Sage Oscura 'Amistad'

Salvia 'Amistad' has become one of the most popular plants in the UK for Mediterranean and exotic-style borders. It is a vigorous, large-growing perennial that produces spectacular, deep royal-purple flowers held in nearly black calyces. These are produced continuously from early summer right through to the first hard frosts. The foliage is a lush, bright green and aromatic when brushed against. While it is often sold as a tender perennial, in many parts of the UK (particularly the south) it will survive the winter if planted in a sheltered, well-draining spot and given a thick mulch over the crown (H3/H4). It is a magnet for pollinators, especially bees. It grows quickly to about 1.2 metres, making it an excellent 'filler' for gaps in a sunny border. For best results, take cuttings in late summer as an insurance policy against a particularly cold winter. It thrives in full sun but can tolerate very light afternoon shade.
