Water Dock
Rumex aquaticus, the Water Dock, is a large, architectural native perennial that brings a strong, naturalistic presence to pond margins and wet areas. It features imposing, deeply veined, lance-shaped leaves that can be quite substantial, providing excellent structural interest throughout the growing season. In summer, tall flower spikes emerge, bearing dense clusters of small, reddish-green flowers, which are followed by attractive, rust-coloured seed heads that persist into autumn. It thrives in boggy ground or shallow water (up to 30cm deep) in full sun to partial shade. Reaching 1-2 metres in height with a spread of 60-90cm, it's ideal for larger, wilder pond settings, offering shelter and food for wildlife. Fully hardy.
