Rose 'Etoile de Hollande'

'Etoile de Hollande' is a classic climbing rose that has been a favourite in Britain since the early 20th century. It is primarily grown for its large, double, deep crimson-red flowers which possess an incredibly strong and delicious old rose fragrance. The petals have a velvety texture, and the blooms are often held on long stems, making them ideal for cutting. As a climber, it is moderate in height, typically reaching between 3 and 5 metres, making it suitable for walls, pillars, or smaller arches. The foliage is dark green and provides a classic backdrop, though it can be susceptible to some blackspot in humid UK summers, so a sunny, airy position is best. It usually provides a heavy first flush in summer followed by occasional repeat blooms later in the season. Its scent alone makes it worth finding a place for in a traditional cottage garden.
