Alpine Currant

The Alpine Currant is a versatile, dense deciduous shrub, typically 1.5-2m in height and spread. While its berries are edible but bland, it's valued for its extreme hardiness (H7) and tolerance of deep shade, making it useful for difficult spots. It produces small, bright red berries which are attractive to birds. Inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers appear in April-May. It's often used for hedging or ground cover and provides excellent habitat and food for wildlife. It tolerates a wide range of soils and is remarkably unfussy about growing conditions.
