Radish (Winter) 'Black Spanish Round'

'Black Spanish Round' is an old and very distinctive winter radish variety that dates back to at least the 16th century. It produces large, globe-shaped roots with a rough, jet-black skin and startlingly white, crisp flesh. The flavour is significantly more pungent and peppery than a standard summer radish, making it a bold addition to salads when thinly sliced or grated. It is also excellent when cooked, which mellows the heat. This variety is incredibly hardy and is intended for late summer sowing to be harvested throughout the autumn and winter. The roots can be stored for several months in a cool, dark place if lifted before the ground freezes solid. It prefers a well-cultivated, free-draining soil and a sunny position. Avoid overly fertile soil which can lead to excessive leaf growth at the expense of the root. It is a reliable and unusual vegetable that provides a spicy kick to winter meals.
