Holm Oak / Evergreen Oak

The Holm Oak is a majestic, large evergreen tree that is particularly well-suited to coastal areas and southern parts of the UK. It has a dense, rounded crown and leathery, dark green leaves that are silver-grey on the underside, somewhat resembling holly when young. It is highly resistant to salt spray and strong winds, making it an excellent choice for windbreaks or hedging in seaside locations. In spring, it produces inconspicuous yellow catkins. While it can eventually become a very large tree, it responds exceptionally well to clipping and pruning, and can even be maintained as a formal hedge or topiary. It is hardy to H6, though young trees may need some protection from very severe frosts. It is drought-tolerant once established and grows well in any well-drained soil, including chalk. Its dense evergreen canopy provides excellent year-round privacy and shelter for wildlife, making it a versatile and enduring addition to the landscape.
