Scarlet Oak 'Splendens'

For those seeking the most intense autumn colour, 'Splendens' is one of the finest oaks available. This cultivar of the North American Scarlet Oak is chosen for its reliably brilliant, fiery scarlet autumn foliage that often persists well into the winter. The leaves are deeply lobed, glossy, and dark green throughout the summer. It grows into a large, stately tree with a broad, open crown. While it is a big tree eventually, it is worth planting if space allows for its incredible late-season display. It is fully hardy (H6) but, unlike many other oaks, it specifically requires acidic or neutral soil to achieve its best autumn colour; it may become chlorotic (yellowing) on alkaline or lime-heavy soils. It prefers a position in full sun and thrives in deep, fertile, well-drained soil. This is a magnificent specimen tree for a large garden or paddock, providing a massive splash of colour just as most other trees are fading.

Sun: Full sun.

Soil: Well-drained, acidic to neutral soil.

Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.

Flowering: May.
