Pear 'Sensation'
'Sensation' is a visually striking red-skinned sport of the famous 'Williams' Bon Chrétien' pear. This cultivar is highly prized in UK gardens for its decorative value as much as its fruit quality. The young foliage often emerges with a reddish tint, maturing to a glossy green. In late spring, it produces attractive white blossoms. The fruit itself is classic pear-shaped with a vibrant, deep red skin when ripe, revealing cream-coloured, melting, and juicy flesh with a sweet, musky aroma. It is a reliable cropper and is relatively hardy, though, like most pears, it performs best in a warm, sheltered site to protect the blossoms from late frosts and to help ripen the fruit. It is not self-fertile and requires a pollination partner from the same or adjacent flowering group. It reaches a manageable size on Quince C or A rootstock.
