Pear 'Concorde'
'Concorde' is a modern pear cultivar that has quickly established itself as one of the best for UK gardens. It was bred at East Malling by crossing 'Conference' and 'Doyenné du Comice', and it successfully combines the best traits of both. From 'Conference', it inherits a reliable, heavy-cropping nature and a degree of self-fertility, while from 'Comice', it gains a superior, melting texture and a rich, sweet flavour. The fruits are large, elongated, and have a green skin that may develop some russeting. The flesh is pale yellow, juicy, and sweet with a lovely aromatic quality. 'Concorde' is particularly well-suited to the British climate and is known for its compact and manageable growth habit, making it an excellent choice for training as a cordon or espalier. It is also more tolerant of less-than-ideal conditions than 'Comice'. The fruit is typically ready for harvest in late September or October and can be stored for several weeks. It is a fantastic all-rounder for any fruit garden.
