Pear 'Beth'

'Beth' is an exceptional dessert pear, often considered one of the finest for domestic UK gardens due to its reliable cropping and compact habit. It was bred at the East Malling Research Station in Kent, making it perfectly adapted to the British climate. The fruit is small to medium-sized with smooth, pale green skin that turns primrose yellow when ripe, concealing creamy, melting flesh with a sweet, honeyed flavour. It is an ideal choice for smaller gardens as it is naturally less vigorous than other varieties. In spring, it produces a profusion of white blossoms that provide an early nectar source for pollinators. 'Beth' is an excellent pollinator for other pear varieties. It performs best in a sheltered, sunny spot to ensure the fruit develops its full sugar content. It is generally hardy across most of the UK, though blossoms may need protection from late spring frosts in more northern or exposed locations.
