Ornamental Pear 'Beech Hill'
'Beech Hill' is a robust and upright cultivar of the common pear, specifically selected for its narrow, columnar habit and ornamental qualities. Reaching a height of 8-10 metres with a spread of only 3 metres, it is an ideal tree for formal avenues, screening, or smaller gardens where vertical interest is needed without too much width. In mid-spring, it is smothered in a dense covering of white flowers which emerge alongside the glossy green leaves. The foliage remains healthy throughout the summer and turns various shades of orange and red in the autumn. It occasionally produces small, hard green fruits which are not of culinary value but add to its natural charm. It is fully hardy (H6) and very tolerant of urban conditions and heavy soils. It is a much more structured alternative to the weeping pear and is excellent for adding height and rhythm to a garden border. It requires minimal pruning to maintain its tidy, upright shape.
