Japanese Arrow Bamboo
Pseudosasa japonica, known as Japanese Arrow Bamboo, is a vigorous running bamboo popular for its robust, upright growth and large, leathery, dark green leaves. It forms a dense, evergreen screen up to 4-5 metres tall, making it an excellent choice for privacy and windbreaks in UK gardens. Its sturdy culms are initially green, maturing to a yellowish-brown. While a runner, its spread is generally less aggressive than some Phyllostachys species, but root control is recommended. It's remarkably hardy (H6), thriving in full sun to partial shade and tolerant of a wide range of soils, including coastal conditions. Inconspicuous flowers appear rarely. Its resilience and striking foliage provide year-round interest and structure.
