Cherry Laurel 'Etna'
Prunus laurocerasus 'Etna' (also known as 'Anbri') is a superior cultivar of the common Cherry Laurel, specifically selected for its more compact growth and striking young foliage. This evergreen shrub is an excellent choice for a dense, medium-sized hedge. In spring, the new leaves emerge a vibrant bronze-orange, creating a beautiful contrast against the mature, dark green, glossy foliage. The leaves are broad and leathery, providing a highly effective privacy screen and sound barrier. It produces upright spikes of scented white flowers in spring, followed by cherry-like red fruits that turn black in autumn. 'Etna' is very hardy (H5) and more resistant to shot-hole disease than other laurels. It is exceptionally versatile, growing well in most soils and tolerating deep shade. It can be maintained easily with a single annual prune in late spring or early autumn, though using secateurs rather than shears helps avoid unsightly cut leaf edges.
Sun: Full sun to full shade.
Soil: Most well-drained soils.
Hardiness: H5 — down to −15°C.
Flowering: Apr, May.
