Cherry Laurel 'Castlewellan'

Prunus laurocerasus 'Castlewellan' is a robust and vigorous evergreen shrub that is widely used for creating tall, dense privacy hedges in UK gardens. It is similar in many ways to the common Laurel but is noted for its slightly more upright and compact growth habit. The leaves are large, glossy, and a rich, dark green, providing an effective sound barrier and visual screen year-round. In spring, it produces upright spikes of white flowers, which are followed by small red fruits that turn black. It is extremely hardy (H5) and very adaptable, growing well in almost any soil and even in deep shade. Because of its vigorous nature, it requires regular pruning to keep it within bounds, ideally with secateurs to avoid cutting through the large leaves, which can look unsightly if shredded by a hedge trimmer. It is an excellent choice for a fast hedge to hide unattractive structures or provide a backdrop for a large border.

Sun: Full sun to full shade.

Soil: Most well-drained soils.

Hardiness: H5 — down to −15°C.

Flowering: Apr, May.
