Damson 'Farleigh'

Also known as 'Crittenden's Damson', this variety originated in Kent in the 1820s and remains one of the most popular damsons for UK gardens. It is an exceptionally hardy and vigorous tree with a compact, upright-spreading habit. It is particularly noted for its heavy and consistent cropping, even in cold or exposed locations. In spring, it is smothered in a cloud of small white blossoms. The fruit is small, oval, and dark blue-black with a heavy waxy bloom. The flesh is greenish-yellow and has that classic, intense, astringent damson flavour that makes it perfect for preserves, jellies, and gin. While it is too tart to eat fresh for most, its culinary quality is unsurpassed. It is self-fertile, though its yield will be even better if planted with another damson or plum. It is a very robust tree that requires minimal maintenance once established.
