Plum 'Count Althann's Gage' 'Count Althann\s Gage'

A superb dessert gage, 'Count Althann\'s Gage' (also known as 'Reine Claude Conducta') is highly regarded for its rich, aromatic flavour and attractive appearance. Originating from Hungary, it produces medium to large fruits with a deep crimson-purple skin dusted with a heavy blue bloom. The golden-flesh is juicy and sweet, making it a favourite for fresh eating. In the UK, it typically fruits in mid-to-late August. The tree has a moderately vigorous, spreading habit and is partially self-fertile, though it crops significantly better when paired with a compatible pollinator like 'Victoria' or 'Denniston\'s Superb'. Its spring blossom is a delicate white, providing good interest for pollinators. It requires a sheltered, sunny spot to ensure the fruit sugars develop fully and prefers a reliable, well-drained soil. This variety is hardier than some other gages, making it suitable for many UK gardens, though it avoids the coldest northern locations. Hardiness is rated at RHS H4.
