Cherry Spire 'Spire'

Prunus 'Spire' is one of the best small trees for narrow spaces or restricted gardens due to its very tight, columnar (fastigiate) habit. In spring, it is almost entirely hidden by a mass of soft pink, single flowers which fade to white as they age. The leaves emerge a delicate bronze-purple before turning a mid-green for the summer. One of its greatest assets is its autumn display, where the foliage turns fiery shades of orange and red. It is a tough and reliable tree, fully hardy in the UK (H6). It is often used in street plantings or as a vertical accent in a formal border. It requires very little pruning to maintain its slim shape. It thrives in most reasonably fertile soils but does not like to be waterlogged. For the best display of flowers and autumn colour, it should be planted in a sunny position. It is highly recommended for urban gardens where lateral space is at a premium.
