Cherry Plum 'Nigra'

Prunus cerasifera 'Nigra', known as Purple-leaved Plum, is a striking deciduous tree often used for dramatic, colourful hedging in UK gardens. Its appeal lies in its dark purple-red foliage that holds its colour well from spring to autumn, providing a bold contrast against green landscapes. In early spring, before the leaves emerge, it is adorned with a profusion of delicate single pink flowers, often tinged darker pink or red, bringing a welcome splash of colour. If left to fruit, small dark red plums may follow. It is fully hardy (H6) and thrives in most well-drained, fertile soils in full sun, where its best leaf colour is achieved. Requires regular pruning for hedging.

Sun: Full sun.

Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil.

Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.
