Sweet Cherry 'Cherokee'
'Cherokee' is a highly recommended sweet cherry for the UK gardener, known for its superb fruit quality and self-fertility. It produces large, heart-shaped cherries that are a deep, dark red, almost mahogany, when fully ripe. The flesh is firm, juicy, and has a rich, sweet flavour that is widely considered superior to many other garden varieties. One of its standout features is that it is a self-fertile variety, meaning it doesn't require another cherry tree nearby to produce a crop, making it ideal for smaller gardens. The tree has a moderately vigorous, spreading habit and is generally quite easy to maintain. In spring, it is adorned with an abundance of beautiful white blossoms which, although relatively hardy, can be protected from late frosts to ensure a good fruit set. The cherries typically ripen in mid-July. Like all cherries, it may require bird netting to protect the harvest, but the delicious, high-quality fruit it produces makes the extra effort well worth it for any fruit enthusiast.
