Drops of Gold strip

Prosartes hookeri (formerly Disporum hookeri) is a refined and understated woodland member of the lily family. It has a graceful upright to arching habit, with stems that zig-zag slightly between the alternate, bright green, deeply veined leaves. In late spring, one to three creamy-white, bell-shaped flowers hang discretely from the tips of the stems. While the flowers are subtle, they are followed by eye-catching, bright orange or red berries in the autumn, which are a real highlight. This plant is native to North American woodlands and is very well-suited to the UK climate, being fully hardy (H5). It prefers a cool, moist, and shady position with soil that is rich in leaf mould. It is an excellent choice for adding vertical structure and texture to a shade garden, and it looks particularly effective when planted alongside ferns and low-growing groundcover. Once established, it is a trouble-free and reliable performer that adds a touch of wild elegance to the garden.

Sun: Partial shade.

Soil: Moist, acidic to neutral, humus-rich soil.
