Vial's Primrose
Primula vialii is one of the most distinctive and extraordinary primulas grown in the UK. Often called the 'Red Hot Poker Primula', it produces striking, narrow flower spikes that emerge in summer. The spikes consist of densely packed buds that are bright crimson-red at the top, opening from the bottom upwards into small, scented, lavender-pink flowers. This creates a stunning two-tone effect that is unique among woodland plants. The foliage is forming rosettes of long, crinkly, hairy green leaves. It is fully hardy (H4) but can be short-lived in British gardens, often acting as a biennial or short-lived perennial, so it is best to allow it to self-seed. It thrives in cool, damp, acidic to neutral soil in partial shade. It is particularly effective near pond edges or in boggy woodland clearings. Its late flowering period (June to July) makes it a valuable addition for maintaining colour in the shade garden after the spring flurry.
