Auricula 'Old Irish Saffron'

The Auricula has a long and storied history in British horticulture. 'Old Irish Saffron' is a captivating 'border' type auricula, which is generally hardier and easier to grow in the garden than the delicate 'theatre' or show types. This cultivar is prized for its stunning and unusual flower colour—a rich, burnished saffron-orange with a distinct pale-yellow eye. The flowers are held in clusters on sturdy stems above rosettes of fleshy, sometimes lightly powdered, grey-green leaves. In the UK, it thrives in a cool, partially shaded spot with well-drained but moisture-retentive, humus-rich soil. It is perfect for a rock garden, a raised bed, or a traditional terracotta pot. Fully hardy (H5), it provides a unique and vintage charm to the spring garden. To maintain its vigour, it is best divided every few years after flowering. This cultivar is a wonderful example of the diverse and historically significant world of Primula auricula.
