Auricula 'Blue Velvet'
Primula auricula 'Blue Velvet' is a stunning example of the 'border' type auriculas, which are generally more robust and easier to grow in the open garden than the highly prized 'show' varieties. This plant forms a rosette of thick, fleshy, grey-green leaves with an attractive mealy or farinose coating. In mid-spring, it bears clusters of slightly fragrant, velvety, deep violet-blue flowers, each with a clear, creamy-white 'eye' or centre. Auriculas have a long history in the UK, particularly associated with the florists' societies of the north. 'Blue Velvet' prefers a cool, partially shaded spot and a well-drained but moisture-retentive soil that does not dry out completely in summer. It is perfect for a raised bed or a prominent spot in a rockery where its exquisite flowers can be seen clearly. Although fully hardy, the flowers and foliage can be damaged by heavy rain, so some gardeners choose to grow them in a dedicated 'auricula theatre' or under a simple glass pane.碎
