Allioni's Primrose 'Snowflake'

Primula allionii 'Snowflake' is a stunning white-flowered selection of this classic maritime Alpine species. It forms tight, low-growing domes of small, sticky, grey-green leaves. In early spring, the foliage is completely hidden by a profusion of large, stemless, crystalline-white flowers with a pale yellow eye. Native to vertical limestone cliffs, this plant is best grown in the UK in an alpine house or a very well-sheltered trough, as its hairy leaves are highly susceptible to rot if they get wet in winter. It requires a vertical or near-vertical planting position to allow water to run off the crown easily. The substrate should be extremely gritty and lime-rich. Despite its fussy nature regarding moisture, it is fully hardy (H4) and incredibly rewarding when in full bloom. Enthusiasts often grow it in 'tufa' rock to satisfy its need for specialized drainage and mineral content. Regular removal of dead flowers and leaves is essential to prevent botrytis.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Very gritty, alkaline soil or tufa rock.

Hardiness: H4 — down to −10°C.

Flowering: Feb, Marbase.
