Allioni 's Primrose 'Aire Mist'

Primula allionii 'Aire Mist' is a stunning cultivar of a species native to the Maritime Alps. This particular selection is prized for its large, pure white flowers which feature a subtle yellow eye, appearing in such profusion in early spring that they often completely hide the foliage. The plant forms a low, tight cushion of small, sticky, grey-green leaves. In the UK, P. allionii and its cultivars are often grown in an alpine house to protect their delicate flowers and hairy foliage from winter damp, which can lead to rot. However, they can be successfully grown outdoors in a sheltered crevice or under a dry stone overhang. This cultivar is very slow-growing and requires excellent drainage and careful watering; it prefers to be watered from below to keep the crown dry. It is a favourite for exhibiting at alpine shows due to its compact habit and spectacular flowering potential. It is hardy down to H4/H5 if kept dry.
