Shrubby Cinquefoil 'Red Ace'
'Red Ace' is a distinctive cultivar of the hardy Potentilla fruticosa, valued for its unusual flower colour. While many potentillas are yellow or white, 'Red Ace' produces vermillion-red flowers with pale yellow reverse sides. Interestingly, the flower colour is most intense during cooler weather; in high summer heat, the blossoms may fade to a more orange or yellowish tone. This deciduous shrub has a low, spreading habit and small, pinnate, mid-green leaves. It is remarkably tough and hardy (H7), making it an excellent choice for exposed or coastal gardens across the UK. It flowers prolifically from early summer right through to late autumn, providing one of the longest flowering periods of any garden shrub. It thrives in well-drained soil and prefers full sun to maintain the best flower production. Maintenance is simple, involving a light trim in early spring to keep the plant neat.
