Lance-leaved Pickerel Weed
This variety of Pickerel Weed is distinguished from the standard species by its significantly longer and narrower leaves, which give the plant a more refined and upright appearance. In late summer, it produces dense spikes of vibrant, sky-blue flowers that stand well above the foliage, providing much-needed colour when many other aquatics have finished blooming. The flowers are rich in nectar and are a magnet for bees and butterflies. It is a robust plant that grows well in shallow water up to 20cm deep and is excellent for masking the edges of a pond liner. In the UK, it is reliably hardy, though it benefits from being positioned in a spot that receives plenty of summer warmth to encourage the best flowering. The heart-shaped base of the leaves and the architectural flower spikes make it a standout choice for both modern and traditional water gardens. It is best maintained by removing old flower spikes and spent foliage in autumn.
