Dyce's Shield Fern Bey

Polystichum x dycei is a magnificent hybrid fern (P. proliferum x P. braunii) that combines the best qualities of its parents. It is a vigorous, evergreen fern that forms a large, impressive rosette of arching, dark green fronds. One of its most interesting features is its ability to produce small plantlets (bulbils) along the midrib of the fronds, which can be pegged down to grow new plants. The fronds have a rich, glossy texture and remain looking good throughout the winter, providing valuable structure. It is exceptionally hardy and performs well in most UK gardens, reaching a height and spread of about 80-100cm. It is a fantastic choice for a large shady border or as an underplanting for trees. It prefers a fertile, humus-rich soil that stays reasonably moist. This fern was named after the famous British pteridologist Jimmy Dyce and is a testament to the rich history of fern cultivation and breeding in the UK.
