Rigid Holly Fern
Polystichum rigens is a robust, evergreen species from East Asia that has proven to be very reliable in UK gardens. It is characterised by its stiff, upright, and somewhat leathery fronds which emerge a vibrant light green and mature to a deeper forest green. The leaflets are sharply toothed, giving the plant a somewhat prickly, holly-like texture. This fern forms an attractive, symmetrical rosette that typically reaches 40-60cm in height. One of its standout features is its resilience; it is notably more tolerant of garden neglect and slightly drier conditions than many other hardy ferns. However, it looks its best when grown in a sheltered spot with plenty of organic matter. Its neat, architectural habit makes it an excellent choice for a small city garden or for use as groundcover in a shaded shrubbery. It is generally resistant to pests and can tolerate both acidic and alkaline soils.
