Alpine Totara Pine 'Otari'

Podocarpus nivalis 'Otari' is a superior selection of the Mountain Totara, forming a dense, low-growing, evergreen shrub with a spreading habit. It is highly valued for its attractive, small, leathery leaves which are a dark olive-green with a subtle bronze tint, especially in winter. This conifer is remarkably tough and thrives in the UK, holding a hardiness rating of H5. It is an excellent choice for ground cover, rockeries, or for planting on banks. In addition to its foliage, female plants may produce small, fleshy red berries in autumn, which are a charming feature. It grows best in well-drained, slightly acidic soil and can tolerate both full sun and partial shade, making it a versatile addition to many garden situations. It is very slow-growing and requires little to no maintenance. Its fine-textured, dense foliage provides an excellent backdrop for showier flowering plants, while its tolerance for wind and exposure makes it an ideal choice for coastal or upland gardens.
